A Blank Canvas
“A plain simple blank canvas,
That’s how I was when I was born.
Now though, societal pressure and expectation,
Makes me feel torn.”
“A canvas freshly dipped in ink,
That’s how I wanted to think.
The whole world at my fingertips,
I could do anything, be anyone,
So why did I accomplish none?”
These are the words I hear around me.
How fortunate am I to be painting my own gallery of life,
When some don’t even get to start as a blank canvas,
Making not even a simple dot, on their life’s artwork.
Such is the way of the world,
However, there are those who choose to defy it.
With each bold stroke of colour,
They’re ready to spread their wings and go sky high.
This new journey they’re embarking on,
Unveils a kaleidoscope of opportunity.
Their personal tapestry weaving alongside,
As they continue their quest of life.
THOUGHTS BEHIND "A BLANK CANVAS"
The people I’ve been fortunate enough to meet throughout my life have left me with much to ponder. Many topics have plagued my mind, but one in particular inspired this poem. These verses honour those who live on their own terms, regardless of unreasonable societal expectations and norms. In a world where privilege often dictates opportunities, the poem reflects the strength of those who break through biased expectations to carve their own path. The narrator's perspective traverses through myriad paths, wherein she observes, reflects, critiques, and ultimately champions those on this journey.
This poem seeks to capture the odyssey we all undertake, reflecting my belief in the transformative power of personal growth and the significance of embracing one’s unique path—ideas I frequently explore through myths, legends, and tales of resilience. Through this work, I hope to inspire others to find beauty in their own course of travel through life, regardless of the obstacles they may encounter.
I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all my friends and peers I've had the privilege of meeting over the past few years. I'm deeply grateful for how you've helped broaden my perspective and taught me to understand the many ways the world works. I will forever cherish and appreciate all that you've shared with me.
